Today was Labor Day, falling on the earliest date possible since it always lands on the first Monday of September. The past few mornings—including this one—have been on the chilly side during my walks. I’m certainly not complaining; it’s a refreshing change from the heat of summer.

This day also marks the beginning of the final four weeks of the Major League Baseball season. Looking at the playoff projections, it seems the field of 12 postseason teams is just about set, with only seeding and positioning left to play out.

I was surprised to learn that Tom Seaver died earlier this week. The National Baseball Hall of Fame reported that he died at the age of 75 this past Monday in his sleep due to complications of Lewy body dementia and Covid-19. Seaver was one of the very best pitchers in my lifetime. I don’t think I missed an inning of “Tom Terrific” and the Miracle Mets in the 1969 World Series. He is one of just ten pitchers in MLB history with 300 wins and 3,000 strikeouts and he struck out 10 straight batters in 1970. He won 3 ERA titles and 3 Cy Young Awards.

Aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan formally surrenders to the Allies, bringing an end to World War II.
President Truman appointed MacArthur to head the Allied occupation of Japan as Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers. For the site of Japan’s formal surrender, Truman chose the USS Missouri, a battleship that had seen considerable action in the Pacific and was named after Truman’s native state. MacArthur, instructed to preside over the surrender, held off the ceremony until September 2 in order to allow time for representatives of all the major Allied powers to arrive.
